Incense is delightful when burned during the holiday season. It fills the home with a lovely aroma and provides a warm, cozy feeling. Certain flavors, like pinecone, cranberry, and cinnamon, are especially effective in inducing the Christmas spirit. There are many makers of incense products, but the Knox brand stands out. Knox was started by Erich Koch in 1958. The company offers incense cones in a variety of flavors from floral and fruity to more exotic varieties like opium and tobacco. They also sell Erzgebirge Incense Candles in holiday flavors like Christmas Scent, Honey Gingerbread, Forest Fragrance, Cinnamon Bark, and Christmas Apple. History The Knox company was first opened by pharmacist Hermann Zwetz in 1902. It was taken over by another pharmacist Carl Bayer, for whom the company was named. It changed hands multiple times before being taken over by Erich Koch who changed the name to Knox. Although Koch passed away, the company stayed within his family seeing various expansions in exports, production halls, warehouses, and technologies. They also added the museum and a handicraft room where the incense in made. They have established themselves as a leader in the industry. Knox stands out from other brands as it has its own Museum of Smoked Candles. Located in Germany, you can visit to find out about the history of smoking across various cultures and countries. You can find out about the raw materials, ingredients used, and production of the candles. Why Incense Cones Incense cones vary from incense sticks, but they have similar applications. You will need to place the cone in a burner. Then light the top and allow it to burn for a few minutes before blowing out the flame. It will continue to smolder slowly. Many prefer incense cones over incense sticks because they produce an aroma quickly. If you light a stick, it will take a while before you smell the aroma. A cone will emit a scent that fills the room in about five minutes. The Incense Appeal Incense has been used since ancient times. In addition to providing a terrific scent, it was also said to cleanse the soul and promote healing. This concept is similar to today’s aroma therapy. Sticks and cones are often used in religious ceremonies as they are thought to promote a spiritual awakening. Christmas will be much more memorable if you complement your décor with a terrific smell. Knox incense cones stand out for their quality and their unique aroma. Will you be adding them to this year’s shopping list?

Travel: Why You Can’t Miss Out on the Herron Morton Place Oktoberfest Experience syndicated from christmassweatersusa.tumblr.com via Tumblr Travel: Why You Can’t Miss Out on the Herron Morton Place Oktoberfest Experience Fashion is a pendulum, swinging in perpetual motion. No matter how surefooted the styles of the time may appear to be, eventually things will begin to move in the opposite direction. We’ve gradually watched formal footwear silhouettes die out to be all but replaced by sneakers, and now, decades later, we’re beginning to watch smarter shoes and boots reemerge. Dress boots are one such style. The likes of brogue and Derby boots have been scarce on the streets for a long time now. Once the go-to everyday shoes for men, they were toppled by more casual designs that became popular in the early-to-mid 1900s, including things like chukka boots and sneakers. But as tailoring regains a foothold in mainstream menswear, it’s time to start paying these formal stompers some attention again. Of course, dress boots never went away. The same brands that have been making them for centuries have kept churning them out decade after decade, unconcerned with fluctuating mainstream shoe trends. Here, we’ll take a look at some of the best you can buy right now, as well as explaining what exactly a ‘dress boot’ is, and when the best time might be to pull a pair on. What Is A Dress Boot? So, what exactly do we mean when we talk about ‘dress boots’? In short, it’s an umbrella term that covers a number of different types of footwear. We’ll go into the specifics of those later on, but generally speaking, a dress boot is any type of boot that can be worn with tailoring. They’re usually simple, free from excessive detail or branding, and made from smooth leather as opposed to suede. Dress boots also tend to have a low-profile sole. This is often made from leather, particularly where the classic Northamptonshire brands are concerned. If it has a chunky commando sole slapped on the bottom of it, it’s going to jar against the clean, sleek lines of a pair of dress pants. One exception to the detail rule is broguing. This is the term used to describe the decorative perforations in a shoe or boot’s upper. They’re usually laid out in swirling patterns, and were originally designed for British country boots to allow water to escape when wading through marshland on shoots. Many brogue boots can still be considered ‘dress boots’ in today’s use of the term. Which Boots Are Dress Boots?Chelsea BootsChelsea boots feature a simple upper with no detail and no laces. Instead, they employ an elasticated panel to each side of the ankle to allow the boot to be pulled on and off with ease. They were popular with the mods of the 1960s, who teamed them with slim-fitting Italian tailoring, and they’re still great for adding a bit of character to tailored looks today. Derby BootsDerby boots are essentially just Derby shoes that extend further up the ankle. Just like their low-top counterparts, they feature an ‘open’ lacing system, which means the eyelets are stitched on top of the vamp, leaving a gap at the bottom. It’s a traditional style that has been around for hundreds of years, and makes a great alternative to a Derby shoe during the colder months. Oxford BootsAgain, Oxford boots are just a loftier version of Oxford shoes. Unlike Derby boots, they feature a ‘closed’ lacing system, where the vamp is stitched over the eyelets so that they’re tight together when laced up. It looks smarter and sleeker, but isn’t a great option for those with wide feet. Oxford boots, although less common these days than Derbies, are really the quintessential dress boots. Brogue BootsAs mentioned above, brogue boots feature elaborate perforated patterns to the uppers. Worn by the landed gentry, this was originally a feature designed to let water escape when wading through marshland shooting game, but it has stuck around as a decorative quirk to this day. When To Wear Dress BootsThe best time to choose dress boots over shoes is during autumn and winter. The taller shape offers more protection from the rain and cold, and the smooth leather is better suited to wet weather than other materials, like suede or nubuck. Seasons aside, the other thing to consider is the setting. Dress boots are supposed to be worn with smart outfits, so it’s best to save them for formal events and special occasions. If the dress code requires you to wear some sort of tailoring, dress boots will generally work nicely. The Best Brands For Dress BootsMyrqvistMryqvist is a label with one clear objective: to enable more men to enjoy the luxury of handmade footwear. The Swedish brand achieves this by operating a direct-to-consumer model, which means no retail markup, lower operation costs. This allows the brand to deliver premium shoes at affordable prices. Myrqvist’s range covers all sorts of footwear, from Oxfords to luxe sneakers, all handmade in Portugal using high-quality materials from France and England. There’s even the option to have bespoke shoes made to order. As far as dress boots go there are a number of great styles to choose from. We’d recommend taking a look at the Tjärnö and Abisko boots: both classic Derbies with different levels of detail. VelascaDirect-to-consumer brand Velasca is all about making the best possible shoes with the lowest possible price tag. Everything is handcrafted by skilled artisans in Italy’s shoemaking capital, Marche, with all the quality and attention to detail you’d expect from the region. We’re particularly fond of the Lampionèe Chelseas, which feature wingtip broguing to the toe for a bit of extra character. MorjasMorjas is another direct-to-consumer footwear brand that focuses on timeless style and quality materials, aiming to deliver the best possible shoes and boots for the lowest possible expense. The label offers a range of lace-up and slip-on boots styles to cater to all tastes and occasions, all featuring the same high-end materials and artisanal craftsmanship. GrensonGrenson is one of the original Northamptonshire shoe brands, and has been crafting classic but characterful footwear in its historic factory for more than 150 years. Some of the first styles Grenson ever made were boots, and it still carries an excellent selection to this day. The Fred brogue boot is a bestseller, for good reason, but if you’re after something even more traditional, check out the confusingly named Shoe No.1: a classic Edwardian toe-cap boot that’ll perfectly complement a nice pair of tailored trousers. R.M. WilliamsAustralian brand R.M. Williams has been making its iconic gusseted riding boots for almost a century. Originally aimed at ranchers, bushmen and farmers, the label has more recently moved into the luxury market, producing a full range of high-end leather goods, including shoes, boots and even clothing. The Craftsman boot is R.M. Williams’ signature style, and is essentially a Goodyear-welted Chelsea boot, handcrafted in Australia. It refers to a picture made to be hung in the window as a decorative home accessory. It can also refer to a picture made of glass that can fit into a windowpane, stained glass windows that depict a scene, or a photograph, graphic or painting that shows a window. These decorations were often made by woodcarvers in Germany featuring holiday scenes. They are perfect for hanging in the window during the holiday season. They spread cheer to all that see them. Read on to find out more about fensterbilders and how to add them to your holiday design. This makes them the ultimate decoration for small areas. • They Cheer Up Your Interior and Exterior: Fensterbilders can be viewed from both the inside and outside of the home spreading cheer to even more people. • They’re Easy to Hang: The decorations have a hole on top that you can slip a string through. This makes them easy to hang and display. • They Catch the Light: A window decoration can catch the light in various ways to cast interesting shadows, fill the room with a unique glow, or add interest to the decoration itself. Popular Fensterbilder Themes Fensterbilders feature a variety of themes often inspired by their German heritage or the holiday season. Here are a few you are likely to find. • Nativity Scenes: It’s not uncommon to find Fensterbilders that feature nativity scenes that pay homage to the religious side of Christmas. • Winter Wonderland Scenes: Winter wonderland scenes may show children playing in the snow, snowmen, and other magical landscapes. • Nutcrackers: Nutcrackers are decorative figurines often dressed as toy soldiers. They are commonly used in holiday décor as they have ties to the Christmas ballet The Nutcracker. They are symbols of good luck in Germany making them the ultimate in German holiday décor. • Church Scenes: Fensterbilders may show church scenes including stately buildings of worship and their devout followers. • Folk Scenes: Germans are known to favor folk art. The inspiration comes through in fensterbilders that feature miners, village characters, angels and more. Fensterbilders are a great way to spread cheer during the holiday season. Now that you know your design options, you are ready to get your home looking its best. Will you be adding one to this year’s décor?

Travel:Why You Can’t Miss Out on the St. John Oktoberfest syndicated from christmassweatersusa.tumblr.com via Tumblr Travel:Why You Can’t Miss Out on the St. John Oktoberfest The flannel shirt is one of the most versatile items in any capsule wardrobe. It’s got your back when you need an extra layer to get through those frosty winter days. Or it can be worn as a breezy top layer – sleeves rolled up and draped over a T-shirt – as days turn to nights during summer beer-garden sessions. Some can even be paired with a tie for business casual offices. There are few garments in a man’s rotation that have this ability to take him from season to season, smart to casual. But the trusty flannel shirt is one of them. It’s an essential through and through, and if you don’t own at least a couple, now’s the time change that. Here we round up Ape’s favourite flannel shirt brands on the market. ASKETAsket isn’t really a fashion brand. Instead, it only produces the clothes you need. Simple Oxford shirts with the perfect tailored cut; selvedge denim jeans that will last a lifetime; and T-shirts that will form the backbone of your wardrobe. Its flannel shirts are the same. Featuring a classic button-down collar, a square hem perfect for wearing untucked, and a soft, 100% organic cotton fabric, they may be the among the best on this entire list. The fabrics are always a strong selling point of the brand. This particular flannel is brushed to perfection, having been custom developed in collaboration with a family-owned Italian mill; it’s lightweight yet robust enough to ensure it’ll look as good now as it will in a decade. ISTOISTO does not believe in seasonal collections – the Lisbon-based brand instead produces a permanent range of luxury wardrobe staples which have been meticulously iterated upon over and over again until they are considered perfect. Designed and made entirely in Portugal, the label’s flannel shirts offer superb value for money. Available in three weights, each is crafted from 100% organic cotton with no unnecessary gimmicks or detailing – just a classic chest pocket, elegant buttons and a regular fit that enables you to layer underneath or wear solo. For a touch of everyday comfort, try the cotton-cashmere blend version. PercivalIf you’re looking to upgrade your rotation of shirts, Percival might be the only brand you need. The British label prides itself on its diverse range of designs, which are cut from some of the finest fabrics around including cotton suede, casentino wool, corduroy and, of course, flannel. For its flannel shirts, which are often made in London, Percival leans towards vibrant wools and patterns such as houndstooth or Black Watch tartan, which give otherwise minimal looks a playful edge. Look out for the brand’s ‘workshirt’ style, which is cut with a boxy fit and comes with four front pockets, making it ideal as a transitional layering piece for unpredictable weather. UniqloIt’s probably fair to say that Japan isn’t a country known for its commitment to minimalism and simplicity. Which is what makes high-street retailer Uniqlo such an anomaly. The Japanese brand has slowly been taking over the world with its tightly curated seasonal collections of high-quality wardrobe basics. Shirts are something Uniqlo is renowned for, offering unbeatable quality at such low prices. The brand’s Oxford button-downs have a glowing reputation in the world of menswear, but its flannels aren’t far behind. Expect super-soft brushed cotton, incredible value and just the right amount of variety. FilsonThe iconic red-and-black checked flannel shirt is just as heavily linked to American woodland culture as chainsaws and bushy beards. And for heritage workwear label Filson, it’s a style that’s embedded in its DNA. The company was founded in Seattle in 1897 to cater for fortune hunters heading north in the Klondike Gold Rush. Heavy flannel shirts and thick blanket coats were, and still are, the label’s bread and butter. Which is what makes Filson a good choice for those looking to stay stylish, warm and own a slice of authentic Americana all at the same time. Taylor StitchCalifornian outdoors specialist Taylor Stitch (featured image, top) was born out of three friends’ frustration at being unable to find the perfect shirt. The founders took their quest extremely seriously, approaching the country’s oldest family of shirtmakers to learn what makes a truly great button-down – from “fit and balance to the importance of French seams to why 22 stitches-per-inch matters on a shirt.” This technical DNA is now central to every single product the brand produce, including their superb range of flannel shirts. Built for the long haul, using only the highest quality sustainable fabrics, you can be sure you’ll get your money’s worth with Taylor Stitch. A Day’s MarchA Day’s March are an ethical, sustainable brand that believe we all should buy less but better. Shunning fleeting fashion trends, which causes waste that is harmful to the environment, the Swedish label instead focuses on creating timeless wardrobe basics; the type of clothes that are designed to be worn day after day, year after year. Their flannel shirts are the epitome of this ethos: coming in solid block colours and traditional checks, they are cut from a quality heavyweight cloth and made exclusively in Portugal. Featuring a comfortable, relaxed fit, they’re ideal for layering during the colder months and make excellent overshirts when the temperature creeps back up. FjällrävenLegendary Swedish brand Fjällräven is no stranger to the great outdoors. Since 1960 the label has been producing hard-wearing kit that embodies the philosophy, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. As a result, much of Fjällräven’s output has a touch of the retro about it and its flannel shirts are no exception. You’ll often hear people saying, “they don’t make them like they used to,” when talking about modern clothing. Well, this is a brand that still does. And with garments as durable and timeless as they are stylish, Fjällräven’s flannel shirts are equally suited to tackling the countryside or city. Portuguese FlannelYou might assume that by having the word “flannel” in its name, Portuguese Flannel is a bra via Tumblr The Best Flannel Shirt Brands For Fall/Winter 2022 Snow globes are a lovely addition to any holiday design. They are a fun display piece that you can turn upside down repeatedly and sit mesmerized watching as the snow falls. They bring a soothing element of the season. While snow globes are common now, they weren’t always ‘a thing’. This article will talk about the origin of snow globes and how to include them in your holiday design. Snow Globes History Snow globes were first developed by surgical instrument mechanic and inventor Erwin Perzy. He was experimenting with a cobbler’s ball to increase the output of the new carbon filament lamp. The cobbler’s ball was a glass ball with a tubular end filled with water that acted as a magnifying glass. The inventor added various substances to the water that were supposed to reflect light. When he added Gries (hard particles of wheat), he noticed they sank slowly, much like a snowfall. He placed a church figurine to the cobbler’s ball filled with Gries and the first snow globe was born. He opened his business “The Original Wiener Schneekugelmanfaktur” in 1900 and it has been growing ever since. The company offers its own snow globe museum. You can come to view custom-made products and learn how snow globes are made. The museum is housed in a charming 250-year-old building. Snow Globe Varieties While we are used to seeing winter scenes inside a snow globe, there’s little that can’t be displayed inside these fun circular domes. If you look on “The Original Wiener Schneekugelmanfaktur” site, you will see snow globes that feature hearts, various animals, flowers, and even unusual items like toilet paper and high heels. How to Include Snow Globes in Your Holiday Décor Snow globes have a flat base and will need to be displayed on a flat surface. These include a mantle, a coffee table, a dining room table, a windowsill… and the list goes on. They can also be included among other winter collectibles like figurines and so on. You can even make your own snow globes. You can use a mason jar filled with water and place your items inside. Add glitter and a pinch of glycerin to allow the glitter to float and you are good to go. Snow globes are magical during the holiday season. Now that you know more about them and how to decorate with them, you can have fun making them part of your Christmas fun. What type of snow globe will you be including in your ornamental scheme?
Traditions: The History of Snow Globes and How They Will Brighten Up Your Holiday Season syndicated from christmassweatersusa.tumblr.com via Tumblr Traditions: The History of Snow Globes and How They Will Brighten Up Your Holiday Season Crossbody bags, sling bags, man bags: whatever you call them, these handy little pouches are everywhere right now. And for good reason. Not only are they extremely practical – keeping pockets uncluttered and allowing you to carry more than just the bare essentials – they can also add a little something extra to your outfits… provided you pick the right one. The crossbody bag was originally designed with security in mind, offering a safe place to store cash and valuables that could be worn close to the body and easily accessed. In more recent years, the style has been co-opted by the very demographic it sought to protect wearers from: petty criminals and so-called ‘roadmen’, who have adopted the sling bag as a sort of unofficial uniform. How do you avoid these negative connotations while still enjoying all the practical perks of this bite-size bag? It’s really just a case of shopping the right brands. There’s a handful of designers we rate highly when it comes to crossbody bags. They’re the labels that have put their stamp on the style, whether by using premium materials, incorporating quirky design motifs or by producing one of the most recognisable versions. In short, if you want to be on trend this year, without looking like a drug dealer, these are the names you need to know. What Is A Crossbody Bag?The crossbody bag goes by various names – sling bag, man bag, shoulder pouch, etc – but the core design is the same. It’s generally used to describe any small bag (big enough for a phone, wallet and a few other daily essentials) that can be worn over the shoulder and across the body. Technically speaking, a bum bag/fannypack (delete depending on which side of the pond you live) can be a crossbody bag, if it’s worn as such. The bag itself usually has one main pocket, an inside zip pocket, and often another small zip pocket to the outside. The strap is usually adjustable, and sometimes features a small buckle so that it can be opened and closed. It’s usually worn slung over the body, with the pouch resting either on the chest or the back. The Best Brands For Crossbody BagsMismoDanish brand Mismo creates quirky bags with contemporary styling that are designed with everyday life in mind. The collection includes briefcases, backpacks, wash bags and wallets, as well as some of the most unique-looking sling bags we’ve come across. The brand’s Drop Bag is the one that really caught our eye. It has an unusual teardrop shape, textured jacquard fabric and leather detailing that makes it stand out from the crowd. Or, if you’re after something more conventional, check out the Belt Bag, which has lots of the same materials and details, but with a subtler shape to it. Porter-Yoshida & CoJapan’s Porter-Yoshida & Co is known for its utilitarian nylon bags, ranging from totes to backpacks and beyond. They’re not cheap, but they look great, and offer an excellent alternative for anyone looking for something a little bit different. There are a few crossbody styles available to choose from, like the Tanker, which features two zip compartments as well as pouch pockets to the front; or the Force shoulder pouch, which is a smaller bag, with just enough room for the bare essentials. Carhartt WIPCarhartt has been doing sling bags since WAY before they went mainstream. The brand’s Essentials Bag has been a firm fixture in the label’s luggage lineup for well over a decade, and is still a great option today. It’s a small square design with several zip compartments, including a short vertical zip pocket to the front, which is a good size to store a smartphone. There’s also a velcro pouch to the front, with a flap bearing the company logo. Elsewhere, there are several smaller styles available, all of which are perfect for keeping a phone and cash safe while in the city or out and about on vacation. PatagoniaLots of brands claim to be eco-conscious, but how many of them really, truly practise what they preach? Not many, but California’s Patagonia is one of the rare few. Recently, the brand’s founder, Yvon Chouinard, made the huge gesture of giving his label away to charity in order to fight climate change. That means that by buying a crossbody bag from Patagonia, like the Ultralight Black Hole Hip-Pack, you’ll be giving a big chunk of the cost to a very important cause. A.P.C.A.P.C. is always our first port of call when it comes to sourcing simple, everyday pieces with a touch of Parisian elegance. Take the Josh Mini Bag for example, it’s an elevated crossbody bag with premium materials and a sophisticated look. It’s made from soft, supple leather and comes in either brown or black to suit a range of occasions. If you’re looking for a smarter alternative to the usual canvas and nylons options, this is a good place to start. KlattermusenSwedish outdoor brand Klattermusen is a must-know for anyone into their gorp. It makes high-end kit for climbing and mountaineering, but with a very strong design language that revolves around asymmetry and off-kilter styling. In short, it’s technical, performance wear that wouldn’t look at all out of place on a Paris Fashion Week runway, and we’re here for it. There are a couple of different sling bags available, including the best-selling Algir, and the slightly larger Hrid. Both feature a multi-coloured rope strap, diagonal openings and trademark netting to the front. PradaFor a high-fashion version of the crossbody bag, Prada should be the first name on your list. The Italian brand makes a number of small personal pouches that can be slung over the shoulder for easy, stylish storage. We’re big fans of the label’s signature belt bag, which features a recycled nylon outer fabric and Saffiano leather trims. The North FaceYou could try to avoid the crossbody bag’s roadman associations, or you could fully lean into them and buy one from The North Face. The American outdoor brand’s sling bags and pouches have become popular among tearaway youths dressed in all-black, but they’re still good bags, and it’s all about how they’re styled. Steer clear of Nike hoodies, Stone Island joggers and balaclavas, and you should be alright.
